Accomplished Salteaux Actress and Producer Jennifer Podemski embraces “Native Women in Film” and Premieres “Empire of Dirt” in US online film festival

U.S. Viewers can watch Empire of Dirt during NUHO online film festival Thursday 2/27 for $1.99

Gemini-nominated actress and Producer Jennifer Podemski, best known for her roles in Bruce McDonald’s acclaimed feature film Dance Me Outside, CBC’s The Rez and Degrassi: The Next Generation, has recently produced “Empire of Dirt” about a Canadian First Nations dysfunctional family of women.

The film, which is Podemski’s first feature and has garnered  5 Canadian Screen Award nominations including Best Motion Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Podemski’s role as the Gritty Matriarch Minnie – will be screening for one day only at new and online revolutionary film festival called the New Hollywood Online Film Festival (NUHO) this February 27, 2012.

“This film took me 8 years to get off the ground and finally 2 years ago I bit the bullet and risked everything to make this happen,” says Podemski.

In addition to Podemski, the other two leading roles are held by Cara Gee who portrays Podemski’s Characters Daughter Lena and Shay Eyre (Peeka) the daughter of acclaimed Native director Chris Eyre.

“People have told me for seven years that this movie will never be made because it is three native women in the lead roles. That is one big problem because nobody knows for sure if there is an audience outside of the native community for native women in film,” says Podemski.

“My argument to that is that if you have a well-executed story or an executed project that is well presented and well performed, and it is something people can relate to with universal appeal, you are going to be fine. People are afraid of supporting that,” she said.

“I would love to see Canada and the United States be more receptive and open-minded when it comes to Native people in general.”

Empire of Dirt will be available to view in the United States this Thursday February 27th for 24 hours. The cost for potential viewers is $1.99 and can be viewed on the New Hollywood Online Film Festival website -https://www.nuhofilmfest.com/EmpireOfDirt
