The Guthrie Theater will kick off its 2010-2011 season with the world premiere of a new play based on a novel by Minnesota author Louise Erdrich.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman is adapting Erdrichs The Master Butchers Singing Club. The novel follows the lives of German immigrants and American Indians in small-town North Dakota between World War I and World War II.
Norman won the Pulitzer for her play, night, Mother as well as a Tony Award for her book of the Broadway musical, The Secret Garden. She also wrote the book for the Broadway musical version of The Color Purple.
The performance schedule for The Master Butchers Singing Club will be announced May 18 when the Guthrie unveils the remainder of its 2010-2011 season.
