Narragansetts challenge 2012 gambling referendum

Providence, Rhode Island (AP) October 2011

Rhode Island’s Narragansett Indian Tribe has asked a state court to declare unconstitutional next year’s ballot question on whether to turn the Twin River slot parlor into a casino.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/qpK2BQ ) that the tribe said in its lawsuit in Superior Court that the Rhode Island Supreme Court has twice declared lotteries shall be prohibited except those operated by the state.

The Narragansetts said its ballot referendum in 2006 was required to pose the question as an amendment to the state Constitution. The tribe says the privately owned Twin River is not being held to the same legal standard.

Twin River spokeswoman Patti Doyle said its owners would not comment on the lawsuit, but that look forward to the ballot question being sent to the voters.
