Johnson, Mike Lejine World War II Veteran

ARIZONA, Tsaile – Funeral services were held for MIKE LEJINE JOHNSON, 93, on April 29, 2010, at the LDS Stake Center in Chinle. Interment followed at the Fort Defiance Veteran’s Cemetery. Mike was born May 19, 1917, in Tsaile. He passed away April 25, 2010, in Tsaile.

    Mike graduated from Albuquerque Indian High School where he was active in sports and silversmithing. Mike was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy in the Pacific. Following his military service, he worked for the federal government as a ranger aide on Chuska Mountain lookout towers and at the Fort Wingate Army Depot. He retired from the BIA Land Operations office, Chinle Agency, after many years of service. Following retirement, Mike continued his lifework as a livestock owner and rancher near Tsaile Lake. He was active in the LDS Church and the Native American Church. He helped many people heal through many traditional ceremonies. Mike was a fan of all sports and enjoyed watching games on TV. He enjoyed playing Navajo Ten with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the large family gatherings at his home and taught his grandchildren that humor, honor and service are important in life. (Navajo Times, April 29, 2010)
