Funeral services were held for IRENE BEKIS-BEGAY, on April 14, at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church. Interment followed at the family cemetery in Tocito, New Mexico. Irene passed away April 7, 2012, in Albuquerque, after a lengthy illness.
Irene graduated in 1959 from Riverside High School, Anadarko, Oklahoma, and began her career as a nurse in Cleveland, eventually working in Albuquerque, Crownpoint, Gallup, Shiprock and Chinle. In 1982, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico. She enlisted as a Public Health Service commissioned officer and retired as commander at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in 2005, with 20 years of active duty service. Irene loved to attend Bible studies and listen to Navajo gospel music. She was often with her brothers working on the livestock. She enjoyed crocheting, teaching others how to crochet, swimming, reading, and watching movies with her grandchildren. (Navajo Times, April 26, 2012)
