Monacan Indian Nation leader and spiritual adviser George Branham Whitewolf has passed away from complications after heart surgery.

Whitewolf’s son, Matt Hosmer, says the Monacan Nation’s assistant chief passed June 7 at a Lynchburg hospital. He was 67.

Monacan Nation Chief Kenneth Branham said Whitewolf was known for making authentic native clothing, including buckskin dresses and other items that were featured in movies and television shows. He owned and operated a store where he sold clothing and handmade jewelry.

Whitewolf was buried June 12 at the tribal burial grounds on Bear Mountain in Amherst County, the tribe’s ancient home.
