Wolf Point man pleads guilty in embezzlement

Great Falls, Montana (AP) September 2010

A former Fort Peck tribal employee has pleaded guilty to his involvement in a nearly decade-long scheme to embezzle more than $1 million from the tribe’s credit department.

The Great Falls Tribune reports Edward O. Smith pleaded guilty to theft from an Indian tribal organization last week. U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Strong scheduled sentencing for Dec. 20.

Smith’s wife is one of six credit department employees charged with taking the money, in part by making fraudulent loans.

An investigation found 41 payments totaling nearly $37,400 from the credit program to Edward Smith between December 2003 and May 2009.

Connie Smith pleaded guilty in August as part of an agreement that calls for her to pay nearly $153,000 in restitution. Her sentencing is set for Oct. 21.
