The Kewaunee School District is closing in on a new mascot after deciding to abandon the Indian nickname after a complaint was made under a new state law.

Since earlier this summer, anyone in the district has been able to submit their idea for a new mascot. A mascot committee took 168 suggestions and narrowed them down to six.

WLUK-TV reports the school board approved the following finalists on last week: Cougars, River Bandits, Storm, Huskies, Knights and Hawks.

A pair of votes are coming up. The first will be for any student or resident in the district. In the second, students will pick between the top two vote getters.

The new mascot will be presented at Kewaunee’s homecoming pep rally on Oct. 8.

The new law that gives the Department of Public Instruction the power to order districts to do away with race-based mascots.
