Kewaunee students choose "Storm" nickname

Students at Kewaunee High School have selected a new nickname – the Storm.

In August, the school board dropped the “Indians” nickname after a complaint was filed with the state.

About 200 suggestions for a new mascot were taken, and a committee narrowed the ideas to two – the River Bandits or the Storm.

Students voted this week. WLUK-TV reports the winner was announced at a pep rally last week.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin Public Radio reports the Mukwonago school district now has one year to drop its “Indians” mascot. Recently, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction ruled that the mascot perpetuates stereotypes of American Indians and is discriminatory.
