Woman acknowledges stealing from Blackfeet Tribe

Great Falls, Montana (AP) November 2010

A former director of the Blackfeet HeadStart Program has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $3,000 from the tribe.

Susan Lynn Meineke of Browning appeared in federal court in Great Falls last week and pleaded guilty to theft from an Indian tribal organization. The Great Falls Tribune reports that sentencing has not been set.

Prosecutors say the 56-year-old, formerly known as Susan Carlson, attended work-related conferences in Helena, Washington, D.C., Denver and Missoula between January 2008 and July 2008 while she was in charge of the program.

Meineke applied for and received a travel advance from the Blackfeet Tribe before each trip, but conference organizers also reimbursed her for the same travel expenses and, in some cases, gave her an honorarium or stipend for her participation. Prosecutors say Meineke never repaid the tribe or the HeadStart Program for the travel reimbursements she received from the third parties. They say she owes the tribe just over $3,000.
