Two Shiprock men plead guilty in drive-by shooting

Two Shiprock men have pleaded guilty in connection with a drive-by shooting on the Navajo Nation reservation eight months ago.

Federal prosecutors said last week that 20-year-old Jarin Scott and 19-year-old Chancey Begay both entered a guilty plea to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, Begay drove Scott to a housing complex in Shiprock on April 12. Scott was accused of firing a shotgun twice into an apartment where his estranged girlfriend lived.

A tribal Department of Public Safety officer heard the shots and pulled over Begay’s vehicle, seized the firearm and arrested the two men.

Prosecutors say Scott and Begay each face up to 10 years in prison when they’re sentenced at a future date.
