Arizona indictment accuses 18 in pot smuggling case

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) December 2010

An indictment charges 18 people with participating in a cross-border smuggling ring – the first criminal case produced by a newly created border crime unit funded under a $94 million settlement paid by Western Union.

The indictment was issued by a grand jury in Tucson in November and announced last week by Attorney General Terry Goddard.

It alleges the group smuggled marijuana and cash through a border gate on the Tohono (toh-HO’-noh) O’odham Indian Reservation in western Pima County.

Goddard’s settlement with Western Union resolved complaints that the company had unscrupulous agents that allowed smugglers to send ill-gotten gains to Mexico.
