Two men are charged in federal court with possessing handguns stolen in a Mellette County burglary last November that left a homeowner with gunshot wounds.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said 19-year-old Wayne C. Richards and 45-year-old Earl D. Dowty made initial court appearances and were ordered to remain in custody.

The criminal complaint filed by an FBI agent said a homeowner returned to his residence south of White River last Nov. 24 to find two men inside his house, each with a handgun. The complaint said he was shot twice in a leg as he ran outside.

Federal prosecutors say the burglary and shooting are under investigation by state authorities.

Dowty was arrested on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Richards surrendered to authorities on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
