Lawsuit against BLM aims to block Nevada wind farm

Las Vegas, Nevada (AP) February 2011

Environmentalists and American Indians are challenging plans for a wind energy project near Great Basin National Park in Nevada.

The civil lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas accuses the federal Bureau of Land Management of ignoring “significant and unknown environmental and cultural impacts” when it gave the go-ahead Oct. 15 for the Spring Valley Wind Energy Facility in White Pine County. That’s about 275 miles north of Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the site is near a cave where migrating Mexican free-tailed bats roost in the fall, and near a place where Indians were massacred during the Goshute War of 1863.

The lawsuit seeks an injunction to stop the project and a court order to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act.
