Assault trial scheduled for BIA officer in ND

Grand Forks, North Dakota (AP) February 2011

A Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer accused of cutting his wife with a knife during a domestic dispute in Devils Lake is to stand trial next month.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that a Feb. 24 trial date has been set for 41-year-old Duane Gunville. He pleaded not guilty earlier to an aggravated assault charge that carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison upon conviction.

Authorities say Gunville’s wife needed several stitches for a knife cut on her chest after the alleged incident last August. Gunville was arrested in the Belcourt area after a standoff.

He’s been placed on unpaid administrative leave from his job as a BIA officer on the Spirit Lake Reservation.
