North Dakota man sentenced for embezzling from tribe

A youth leader for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa’s Suicide Prevention Program has been sentenced for embezzling from the tribe.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says 26-year-old James Blue of Belcourt pleaded guilty in federal court and was sentenced to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service. He also was ordered to pay $928 in restitution.

Purdon says Blue received a travel check for about $1,000 from the tribe last summer for a trip to Minnesota and used the money for personal items and entertainment rather than going on the trip. Purdon says Blue later returned $80 to the tribal finance office.
