UND president says he’s following board orders

University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley says he’ll be following the Board of Higher Education’s direction about what to do with the Fighting Sioux nickname.

The North Dakota Senate recently approved a bill that orders UND to keep its nickname and logo of an American Indian warrior.

However, the board has told UND to retire the nickname and logo. The school has been planning to do that in August.

Kelley says UND doesn’t intend to take any further action until the board “clarifies” its earlier instructions.

North Dakota university system Chancellor William Goetz says he expects the board will meet shortly after Gov. Jack Dalrymple signs the nickname bill.

Goetz says the board will discuss what to do in light of the Legislature’s action.
