Four wounded in Lummi Reservation stabbings

Ferndale, Washington (AP) July 2011

A party on the Lummi Indian Reservation ended early because of stabbings that injured four people.

The Bellingham Herald reports one teenage suspect was taken into custody shortly after deputies arrived about 3:30 a.m. Police, Whatcom County deputies and federal agents searched the area near Ferndale for a second teen.

Sheriff Bill Elfo said a number of people at the party had been drinking.

Lummi Assistant Police Chief Ralph Long says three victims were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, and the fourth refused treatment. One man with numerous wounds, including one to the throat, had surgery. Two others were treated and released.

Long says three of the victims are Lummi tribal members and one is from another tribe. He says the two suspects are not Lummi members.
