Trial date changed for woman accused of killing infant son 8-07

Minot, North Dakota (AP) - A woman accused of killing her baby boy eight years ago on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation is now scheduled to stand trial later this year.

Dana Deegan’s trial was to begin this week in federal court in Minot, but U.S. District Judge Dan Hovland late last month granted a delay until Dec. 10 after Deegan’s attorney said he needed more time to prepare. Hovland’s order said prosecutors did not object.

Deegan is accused of leaving the boy, her fourth child, alone without food or water for two weeks because she was unable to care for him. The boy is believed to have been younger than 2 weeks old at the time of death.

A rancher in 1999 found a suitcase containing the body of the infant along state Highway 22, north of Mandaree.
