Woman indicted in deaths of her two children

Riverton, Wyoming (AP) 10-07

A Fremont County woman is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of her two children. They died from injuries suffered in a vehicle accident this July in which prosecutors say the woman was driving while under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance.

Shawnda Macrista Frazier was indicted Sept. 20 in U.S. District Court on two charges of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The accident occurred July 14 when Frazier was driving on 17 Mile Road southwest of Riverton. Elena Jade Frazier, 4, and SnowShield TalksDifferent, an infant boy, died.

Frazier is scheduled to go to trial Dec. 3 in Cheyenne before U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson. Frazier’s case is in federal court because she’s an American Indian and a resident of the Wind River Reservation.

Authorities have not released details of the crash. The (Riverton) Ranger newspaper has reported that a witness at the scene said there were five people in Frazier’s Ford Explorer. The witness said Frazier apparently overcorrected while trying to pass another vehicle and rolled the Explorer.

Frazier and two other occupants were found in the Explorer when it came to rest, but the two children who died were ejected, the newspaper reported.
