Negotiations continue in smoke shop case

Providence, Rhode Island (AP) 10-07

Negotiations are continuing between prosecutors and seven members of the Narragansett Tribe accused of fighting or striking state police who raided a tribal smoke shop.

Prosecutors, defense attorneys and a lawyer for Governor Don Carcieri spent the morning negotiating with a mediator appointed by the state Supreme Court.

Defense attorney William Devereaux says the sides have a week to respond to proposals raised during the closed-door meetings. He would not describe the talks.

The seven defendants, including Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas, are charged with offenses ranging from disorderly conduct to assault for allegedly scuffling with police four years ago.

The Supreme Court pushed each side to compromise just before the start of a scheduled trial.
