Poplar man reaches plea agreement in beating death

Great Falls, Montana (AP) 10-07

A Poplar man has reached a plea agreement for the beating death of his cousin on the Fort Peck Reservation in December 2003.

Jittawee C. Bear Cub, 21, plead guilty to second-degree murder during October in the death of Richard Red Dog, 25, court records said.

Jordan Martell, 24, is serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in Red Dog’s death. Prosecutors said Martell provided the weapons and instigated the assault on Red Dog. The defendants have admitted to drinking, smoking marijuana and taking prescription pills the night of the murder.

Red Dog was beaten with a baseball bat and a padlock on a chain and stabbed as many as 20 times. The defendants said his body was thrown into the mostly frozen Missouri River, but it has never been found.

Red Dog’s mother, Rhea Starr, said she doesn’t believe the killers have been completely truthful with authorities about where they dumped the body.

“I’m glad this is all coming to an end,” she said. “At the same time, they still haven’t told me exactly where my son is.”
