Jury finds Janis guilty of theft

Rapid City, South Dakota (AP) 10-07

A former vice president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe was convicted of stealing money from the tribe in 2004.

Eileen Janis was found guilty during late October on one count of theft from a tribal organization.

Federal prosecutors said Janis took payroll advances – which tribal employees are allowed to do – but that her spending snowballed and she owes the tribe more than $22,000 for payroll advances.

Janis faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines when she is sentenced Jan. 28.
