Piece that was part of national tour stolen at Va. Quilt Museum

Harrisonburg, Virginia (AP) 11-07

Harrisonburg police are investigating a break-in at the Virginia Quilt Museum in which a quilt that was part of a nationally touring exhibit on Native American quilts was stolen.

Museum curator Joan Knight says someone broke into the museum Nov. 4 and took only the one quilt. It was one of 29 from the touring exhibit organized by Michigan State University and the Smithsonian Institution that the museum had displayed since early October. The cotton quilt named “Daybreak/Dawn” features a bold pattern similar to traditional Native American beadwork. Knight says it is unusual because it’s one of only a few made by a husband-and-wife team.

The quilt was made by Charlie and Julia Grinnell of North Dakota in 1995.
