Supreme Court declines to hear Utah poaching case

Salt Lake City, Utah (AP) 11-07

The U.S. Supreme court will not hear the appeal of a Utah man who wants his conviction on state poaching charges overturned.

Rickie L. Reber says his “treaty rights” as member of an American Indian tribe allows him to hunt and fish without a license. Reber claims to be a member of the Uintah Tribe, which is not federally recognized.

Reber was convicted of poaching a trophy deer with his teenage son in Uintah County.

In April, the Utah Supreme Court upheld the conviction in 2004.

Reber appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court in August. His attorney learned during November the case won’t be heard. Mike Humiston says the high court has too many other cases.
