NCAA posts "Fighting Sioux" nickname settlement statement

Grand Forks, North Dakota (AP) 11-07

The NCAA has posted a statement on its Web site recognizing the University of North Dakota’s American Indian programs and outreach services.

It’s part of the settlement last month of UND’s lawsuit against the NCAA over the postseason use of the school’s controversial “Fighting Sioux” nickname. The NCAA statement on www.ncaa.org also says that in general, the association continues to believe that the use of Indian names and imagery can create “hostile or abusive” environments.

Another part of the settlement requires UND to retire its nickname and Indian-head logo in three years if the school can’t win tribal support.
