Man gets 24+ years for death of toddler in Spokane

A Spokane man who said he was pressured into confessing that he killed his 20-month-old adopted son faces 241/2 years in prison.

Thirty-eight-year-old Avery E. Sam was sentenced in Spokane County Superior Court for second-degree murder.

Testimony showed Devon L. Miller, the great-nephew of his wife, Angelique P. Sam, died of bleeding on the brain on Aug. 6, 2006. Investigators say he had been violently shaken and hit on the head. Sam maintains that the boy fell in the bathtub.

The boy was adopted under an agreement between the state and the Yakama Nation tribal courts. A state review concluded that he never should have been placed in the home because of Sam’s criminal record, including convictions for theft, drunken driving and drug possession.
