Head of Omaha Tribe’s housing office charged with embezzling

Omaha, Nebraska (AP) 5-08

The executive director of the Omaha Tribal Housing Authority has been charged with embezzling more than $30,000 since 2003.

U.S. Attorney Joe Stecher’s office said May 23 that 36-year-old Erica Spears of Macy was indicted on two counts of embezzlement. If convicted of both counts, she faces up to 15 years in prison.

A news release says Spears took more than $1,000 from the Omaha Tribe for personal use since November 2003. She also allegedly received more than $30,000 in reimbursements for unauthorized overtime, wages and benefits on top of her salary, and fraudulent travel expenses from October 2003 through early 2005.

A call to the Omaha Tribe’s office in Macy went unanswered. A phone number for Spears wasn’t listed.
