Mohican tribe mulls lawsuit against US Interior Dept.

A Wisconsin tribe says it may sue the U.S. Interior Department over its decision to allow more than 13,000 acres of land to go into trust for the Oneida Indian Nation of New York.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans is based in Bowler in Shawano County. The tribe says its ancestors stayed with the Oneida for several decades in the 1800s until they were forced by wars and Congress to relocate to the Midwest.

Stockbridge-Munsee Band president Bob Chicks says about 3,000 of the 13,000 acres were in the Stockbridge claim area.

Oneida officials dismissed that assertion in 2005 when they filed their trust application for the land.

Chicks says his tribe is considering challenging the agency’s decision in court.
