Teen indicted on murder charges

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (AP) 6-08

Federal prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted Akeem Rooks on two counts of murder for a house fire that killed two children on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

The 18-year-old also is charged with one count of arson that endangered human life and one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

The May 2 fire at Cherry Creek killed 4-year-old Keya Rooks and her 2-year-old brother, known both as Marvin Evenson and Marvin Rooks. The defendant is the brother of the two victims.

U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said the sexual abuse charge involves a third child and is alleged to have occurred on the same day as the fire. Rooks was already under arrest on an earlier charge of arson that endangered human life.
