Action needed to help Wisconsin Mascot Bill, AB-35 progress toward becoming law

Dear Editor,

The Race-based Team Name, Mascot, and Logo Bill - Assembly Hearing will be held on March 17, 2009

Our bill has media attention to the tune of over 100 newspaper articles and television broadcasts since Monday Feb. 23.  Many on-line and editorial responses have been negative and dismissive. We need to counter such messages or legislators may think they represent the general will of the people.

Before, and at the Assembly Education Committee hearing on March 17, we have a small window of time to share our views, logic, testimonies, and evidence with the committee members and chair.

Here are a few ways to support this bill:

If your Assembly representative is a member of the Education Committee:  You can write, call, or email him/her to register your support of AB-35. (See link below to check who your representatives are and check it against the list of committee members, also below).

Whether your Representative is a member of the committee or not:  Everyone can call or email the Education Committee Chair – again, to register your support before the hearing.  When you do, request your correspondence be shared with all members of the Education Committee – then all the members will receive your statement even if you do not live in their district.  The Chair is Sondy Pope-Roberts.  Phone: (608) 266-3520 or (888) 534-0079.  Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. Attend the March 17 hearing at our State Capital: You can give your testimony, or just sign in supporting the bill. If you want to speak, please have a copy in writing, in case there is not time for you to talk and so it may be entered in the hearing’s records for committee members to review before they vote.

On the media front:  Searching for news articles with “Wisconsin” and “mascots” currently produces 107 results from the past few days with the search engine I use. Many of the print and television stories have on-line response forums.  Papers and other media also have links to submit op-ed or guest articles.  Submitting articles, or posting on the response forums is another way to make your views known.

We can provide a “Talking Points” document, and we are posting links hoping they are useful resources.  If you want other links or documents emailed to you, or if you have questions or ideas, please call Brett at (715) 571-2521, or email: This email address is being protected from spambots. Thank you for supporting  this non-partisan civil rights legislation. It is a matter of time before Wisconsin, or another state passes legislation to this end.  Hopefully the distinction will go to Wisconsin, and hopefully the time is NOW.  If we work together, I believe it will happen.
