Colts' coach Dungy signs football for college auction

PABLO, Mont. (AP) 4-07

The centerpiece of this year's Salish Kootenai College Foundation's annual fundraising auction is a football signed by dozens of members of the 2007 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts.

But now the foundation, which raises scholarship money for the tribal college, has another compelling item.

In mid-February, the school made public its good fortune in receiving the silver and blue football after seeking auction donations from numerous professional sports teams the previous fall. The ball was signed by Colts players from Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning to Adam Vinatieri, who scored a record 34 points on field goals and extra points in the Super Bowl after his opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown.

Foundation Director Lois Slater noted at the time that the ball lacked only the signature of head coach Tony Dungy.

Someone clipped out a newspaper article about the autographed football and sent it to the Colts.

On Thursday, the SKC Foundation received another football for the auction - this one signed by Dungy.

Associate director Selina Kenmille said the ball was accompanied by a letter from the Colts' community relations assistant Stephanie Mathes, who said the team hoped the ball with Dungy's signature would help SKC raise more money for its general scholarship fund.

The two footballs will be auctioned on Saturday, May 19, at the Kwa Taq Nuk Resort in Polson. The auction also includes a football signed by the 2005 Green Bay Packers.
