National Indian Basketball Coaches Association sets 2008 season

Bemidji, Minnesota (ICC) 4-08

The National Indian Basketball Coaches
Association has recently been formed to promote
the growth and development of Indian and
non-Indian high school and college coaches that
coach American Indian athletes and to recognize
outstanding Indian and non-Indian high school and
college athletes, coaches, and programs. "I've
envisioned the idea to organize coaches
throughout the country and finally put it all
together," said Executive Director Dan Ninham.
"While visiting a number of Indian and non-Indian
coaches in the past few months throughout the
country, a common interest has been there for a
long time."

Dan Ninham is an enrolled member of the Oneida
Nation from Wisconsin and has been the head coach
of the Cass Lake-Bena Panther boy's basketball
team on the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation
in northern Minnesota for the past decade. An
Executive Board has been developed to lead the
association.

Six regions throughout the country will focus on
the top American Indian high school players,
coaches and programs within the regions. All
Star Games, youth skills clinics, and coaching
clinics will be held at each region this summer.

The inaugural National Indian Basketball Coaches
Association (NIBCA) Regional Senior All Star Game
and the All NIBCA Regional Teams (underclassmen
may be nominated for the region team) nomination
deadline is April 20th for this year. Those interested
in the project should keep in touch. The nominee is required
to be an enrolled member of an American Indian
tribe.

High School head coaches may nominate athletes
from other schools as well as their own athletes.
The following criteria needs to be sent to Dan
Ninham at the email and/or postal mailing address
