SDSU Foundation raising money for Rosebud Sioux rec complex

Rapid City, South Dakota (AP) 6-08

The South Dakota State University Foundation has begun raising funds to help build a $1 million sports complex on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.

Tribal officials say more than 60 percent of tribal members are under 21 but that few recreational opportunities exist for young people.

Tribal member Ken Ladeaux said he hopes a rec center can help the youths see a brighter future.

In the past, he said a lack of investment capital has prohibited such a development. Networking with groups like the SDSU Foundation is helping to bring in funding, Ladeaux said.

“The only way you’re going to solve a lot of these problems is to develop a coalition of resource providers in a lot of different areas,” he said. “In this way we can set up something that will be beneficial to a lot more generations to come.”

Besides fundraising help from SDSU, the Rosebud tribe has promised $1,000 a year of its own money for a new parks and recreation division.

Officials hope the project will help curb the reservation’s high teen suicide rate.
