Tribal tourism effort includes earth lodges

New Town, North Dakota (AP) 8-08

Earth lodges are the centerpiece of a new Three Affiliated Tribes effort to bring tourists to the Fort Berthold reservation.

Harley Good Bear has been putting up an authentic teepee at the site of the Earth Lodge Village, west of the Four Bears Casino near New Town.

“We have to show the rest of the world what a beautiful culture that the original Americans had,” Good Bear said.

Ramona Woods, a marketing coordinator for the tribes, says the tribes want to attract people interested in the rich history of the region, where members of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes once lived in earth lodges.

“This is who we are, so we’re going to be bringing people in to see it,” Wood said.

Good Bear calls the teepee “America’s first mobile home,” and he says it represents a spirit.

“The spirit is the skin, poles are the ribs, fire is the heartbeat,” he said.

Tribal officials say the earth lodges will be destinations for tour groups, and people could even arrange to spend a night in them.
