American Indian exhibit set to tour Oregon

Coos Bay, Oregon (AP) 10-08

A three-part traveling exhibit that looks at Oregon’s tribal cultures has begun touring the state.

The exhibit called “Oregon is Indian Country” is being presented by The Oregon Historical Society and the state’s nine federally recognized tribes.

Its topics include tribal cultures and traditions as well as current issues facing the state’s American Indians.

Anthropologist Denise Hockema says the exhibit fills a gap left by the state’s education system, which requires only fourth-graders to learn about tribes.

The exhibit is being shown at the Coos County Historical and Maritime Museum in North Bend as well as the North Bend and Coos Bay public libraries.

During the next two years, the exhibit will be taken to other Oregon counties.
