Facts about the Carlisle Indians football team

By The Associated Press 6-07

Facts about the Carlisle Indian football teams profiled in “The Real All Americans: The Team that Changed a Game, a People, a Nation.”

-From 1911 to 1913, Carlisle's teams won 38 games and lost just three.

-Carlisle reveled in chicanery, once using a jersey with an elastic band in the waist to perform a hidden-ball trick against Harvard in 1903 that resulted in a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

-Jim Thorpe, widely considered one of the greatest modern athletes, spent seven years at Carlisle with a two-year interruption during which he played semipro baseball. Those two summers led to him being stripped of a pair of gold medals from the 1912 Olympics.

-Among the innovations legendary coach Glenn “Pop” Warner conceived at Carlisle were the single- and double-wing offenses, the bootleg, the body block and the three-point stance.
