Area to be dedicated to honoring Saginaw Chippewas

Flint, Michigan (AP) 7-09

An area of Flint once planned for residential housing now will be dedicated to honoring and researching the Saginaw Chippewa who lived and died there.

A team of volunteers funded by the tribe will excavate the land during August.

The tribe then will perform a private ceremony for their ancestors, and the site will be seeded over with grass and turned into a memorial park.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant and The Flint Journal report a construction crew digging last year came across two human remains that turned out to be ancestors of the tribe.

It’s estimated the remains of up to 20 tribal ancestors – more than 150 years old – are at the site.
