Emmett Township, Michigan (AP) 8-09

Michigan’s newest casino has opened.

The FireKeepers Casino near Battle Creek opened to the public during August after three days of simulated operations.

The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi own the casino, which took 15 months to build. It stands on 78 acres alongside Interstate 94 in Calhoun County’s Emmett Township, about 60 miles south-southeast of Grand Rapids.

FireKeepers has a 107,000-square-foot gaming floor with 2,680 slot machines, 78 table games, a 120-seat poker room and a bingo hall.

The casino also offers five restaurants and an attached parking garage with room for 2,080 vehicles.

It’s the state’s 19th tribal casino. Three non-tribal, or commercial, casinos operate in Detroit.
