Arizona tribes’ payments from gambling are down

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) 11-09

The money that the state of Arizona gets from tribes’ gambling operations is down.

The state Department of Revenue reported that tribes’ payments under compacts with the state total approximately $86.5 million. That’s during the fiscal year that ended June 30 and down 9.9 percent from the previous fiscal year.

Department director Mark Brnovich says that’s an impact from the poor economy.

About half of the money paid to the state will go to education, with other big portions going to emergency services, gambling regulation, wildlife conservation and tourism.

The compacts require tribes to pay one to eight percent of their gross gambling revenues to the state, counties and municipalities, with the amount depending on each tribe’s net.
