The director of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe has been chosen to serve as a member of the Smithsonian Institution’s Native American Repatriation Review Committee.

Shelby Tisdale was nominated by the board of the Society for Applied Anthropology.

She will join the seven-member committee for its meeting during May in Washington, D.C.

Tisdale says her experience at the tribal and state levels will be helpful in assisting the Smithsonian in monitoring and reviewing its repatriation process.

The committee meets at least twice a year. It was originally established to monitor and review the inventory, identification and return of human remains and funerary objects. It also deals with sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony.
