Crist signs Indian gaming bill with Florida Seminole

Tallahassee, Florida (AP) May 2010

Gov. Charlie Crist has signed into law a 20-year gaming deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida that will pay the state about $1.2 billion in the next five years.

Crist signed the bill (SB 622) April 28, which gives the Seminole exclusive rights to have blackjack and other table games at three Broward County casinos and others in Immokalee and Tampa. All seven tribal casinos can keep operating Las Vegas-style slot machines.

After rejecting a compact last year, state lawmakers were able to agree this time. Some legislators opposed the compact because it substantially expands gambling opportunities and is expected to further cut into wagering at the state’s horse and dog tracks and jai alai frontons.
