Museum of Indian Arts and Culture museum gets grant to survey collection

Santa Fe, New Mexico (AP) May 2010

A $57,370 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services will let the state-run Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe survey its collection of 5,300 whole and reconstructed archaeological ceramics vessels.

The collection includes examples of some of the earliest known Mogollon and Ancestral Puebloan ceramics and others made during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Museum director Shelby Tisdale says the collection offers a comprehensive view of ceramics made or used in New Mexico before 1800.

She says it spans nearly 1,400 years of Southwestern Native American cultural history.

The information will allow conservation staff to assess previous reconstructions and current conditions and determine the appropriate way to move the collection to the new Center for New Mexico Archaeology.
