FBI investigating 2006 theft of Caddo artifacts

Magnolia, Arkansas (AP) 2-08

The FBI is asking for the public’s help in the investigation of a 2006 theft of Caddo artifacts from a state office at Southern Arkansas University.

William C. Temple, special agent in charge at the FBI’s Little Rock office, asked that anyone with information that would help locate the ancient artifacts call the FBI office or local police.

The 26 pieces of pottery, dating back to 600 A.D., were uncovered in 1980 in an ancient Caddo Indian burial ground during a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers containment project on the Red River near Cedar Grove. They were reported missing in August 2006 from the Arkansas Archeological Survey Research Station at SAU.

It is a federal offense to have or sell stolen Indian artifacts.
