Reward offered in possible looting of ancient burial mounds

Historic preservationists are offering a $2,000 reward they hope leads to an arrest in the possible looting of prehistoric American Indian burial mounds in far southern Illinois.

Officials say someone recently dug three holes several feet wide and deep into the side of one of the nine mounds making up the Kincaid Mounds historic site in Massac and Pope counties.

Two of the holes reportedly were in locations where looters struck last year.

Authorities say they’re not sure if any artifacts or human remains were removed.

Kincaid is an ancient town and religious center of the Mississippian culture of 1,000 years ago.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Massac County Sheriff’s Department or the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
