Nine Mile Canyon Coalition honored for work

An Arizona-based rock art preservation and research group has honored the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition for its efforts to protect ancient artifacts in eastern Utah.

The coalition and its partners - the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance - were honored during May with the Conservation and Preservation Award from the American Rock Art Research Association.

Nine Mile Canyon holds more than 10,000 known American Indian rock-art images. The artifacts, some more than 1,000 years old, are at risk of being damaged by oil and gas development on the West Tavaputs Plateau.

Last year, the coalition, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and The Wilderness Society sued the Bureau of Land Management to stop the drilling.
