Remains found in Oakland came from burial site

Oakland, California (AP)7-09

Oakland police say a human skull and bone fragments discovered near the Oakland Estuary turned out to be from an American Indian burial site.

The remains were dug up by a construction crew working on an underground cable project during June.

Oakland police homicide Sgt. Rachael Van Sloten says the coroner and a historian with the Native American Heritage Commission determined the skull and fragments were found in an area previously documented to be the site of American Indian burial grounds.

In a similar incident in January, a public works crew also found what was later determined to be the remains of an American Indian child while working on a street in Alameda.
