Orwell historic site hosting spear demonstration

Orwell, Vermont (AP) September 2010

Mount Independence State Historic Site is hosting the 15th annual Northeast Open Atlatl Championship on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19.

The atlatl is a shaped wooden stick once used to help people hunt.

Artisans will demonstrate Native American and primitive skills, and workshops are planned on how to make tools out of stone. Archaeologists will be on hand to identify objects brought by members of the public, and there will be showings of the film “Champlain: The Lake Between.”

Normally, the event is held at Chimney Point park in West Addison, but that’s closed now because of construction the Lake Champlain Bridge. This year, it’s in Orwell.
