Ex-attorney asks Navajo court to review disbarment

Window Rock, Arizona (AP) November 2010

A former attorney for the Navajo Nation Council is asking the tribe’s high court to reconsider its decision to prohibit him from practicing law on the reservation.

The Supreme Court disbarred Frank Seanez last month, saying he advised tribal lawmakers to defy court orders.

Seanez says he acted within his statutory duties.

His attorney, Levon Henry, filed a petition for reconsideration last week.

Henry says Seanez’s actions did not constitute gross misconduct as the court determined and that Navajo law allows debate about the legality or appropriateness of court decisions.

The petition seeks to have the court opinion withdrawn or the matter referred to the Navajo Nation Bar Association, which typically reviews complaints about its members.
