Oregon community college to open new longhouse

Eugene, Oregon (AP) December 2010

Lane Community College is getting ready to officially open the doors to its new longhouse on its campus in Eugene.

The $1.6 million building has taken more than four years to build, but officials say it is only the second Native American longhouse to open at a community college nationally.

The Register-Guard reports the 6,200-square-foot building has fir and cedar log beams, hand-hewn cedar planking and plenty of skylights.

The building’s centerpiece is its great room, a large open space framed by rough-hewn logs. Off that is the Hall of Honor, a small rotunda with a display case for each of the nine federally recognized tribes in Oregon.
